The main difference between these two masters programs is that the Master of Science degree includes more research based work, and the Master of Engineering degree includes more coursework.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering, many of the pass-outs consider doing master’s in engineering. Some consider it after a few years of experience in the field, while others go for it right away after completing their bachelors engineering program. Now the confusion arises in their minds is between  the Master of Science degree &  the Master of Engineering degree. Master of Science
A Master of Science in Engineering degree includes a wide range of fields, such as mechanical engineering, computer science engineering, electrical engineering and engineering management. This type of degree usually includes research based work and generally requires a completion of thesis. It qualifies the holder to apply for a program leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in engineering.

Master of Science degree typically requires 30 semester hours of work in addition to Bachelor of Science degree. A thesis worth 4-8 credits is also required for most of the programs. Some of the programs have a non-thesis option with requirements almost same as those required for a Master of Engineering degree. Also, a comprehensive exam is required by many colleges.

Master of Engineering
A Master of Engineering degree is focused towards advanced preparation of technique in engineering. This degree typically includes more coursework than research. And hence it is not much fit for preparation for entry into a PhD engineering program.

Master of Engineering degree typically requires 30 hours of coursework in addition to Bachelor of Science degree. Some of the programs allow credit points for internships, and many of them arrange comprehensive exams. As this program doesn’t include thesis, so this one completes in lesser time as compared to Master of Science in Engineering.

In short, if you want to pursue a Ph.D. Degree or to go for research career in engineering you should earn the Master of Science degree. On the other hand, if you want to earn right away and are planning to move your career working in the field of engineering, then Master of Engineering would be more suitable option.
